Lego Projects

These projects were created using LDraw, a freeware virtual Lego modeling program, and rendered using POV-Ray, a freeware raytracer.

Tutorials:

Link LDraw to SimCity 3000 Unlimited Tutorial: A tutorial describing how to import LDraw models into SimCity 3000 Unlimited.
Link Polarized Glasses Tutorial: A tutorial describing how to render LDraw models so that they can be viewed in 3D using polarized glasses.
Link Cleaning LDraw Models for Export: A tutorial describing why it is hard to clean LDraw models for export to other formats or applications.

Projects:

Link LDraw Models: Lego models I’ve created using LDraw and POV-Ray.
Link Datsville Relicense Project: A project created to relicense Datsville under a modern, open license.
Link Datsville Map: A WIP interactive map of Datsville.
Download Datsville Lite: I used LDBoxer to replace Datsville's bricks with boxes (in *.LDR format), thereby speeding up the rendering process. This is only useful as a rough "sketch" of Datsville, due to the inferior quality of the pieces.
Link Lego Set List: A full list of Lego sets I purchased or inherited.
Link Carriage House Virtual Tour: A panoramic virtual tour of one of my models.

Tools:

Download LDBoxer Boxes: This is an extended library of boxes (in *.LDR format) to be used with LDBoxer. LDBoxer is a utility that replaces the bricks in a model with simplified shapes. Boxes lack many of the details, including studs, that make a scene visually rich, but also make rendering a slow process. A text search-and-replace tool can be used instead of LDBoxer.

POV-Ray Road Macros: My POV-Ray macros for creating LDraw-style roads.
Download LDraw Grids & Axes: This is an assortment of axes and grids (in *.LDR format) that I have modified from ones I obtained elsewhere. Use them to orient models within the coordinate system.
Download POV-Ray Materials Include: This include file collects all of the LDraw materials data in a seperate file so that you don't have to store several local copies.
Download POV2LDR: This is a command-line tool meant to "extract" MPD files from POV files generated using L3P by Lars C. Hassing. It works with files created by both version 1.3 and 1.4 of L3P.
Download MLCad.grp: My own personal modified version of "MLCad.grp" with many additional category groups.
